Fournos Extends Helping Hand to Stranded Tourists
(21 April 2010)
When ACSA put out the word to airport restaurants that hungry tourists were stranded penniless at O.R. Tambo International Airport, Fournos Bakery stepped up to the plate. Managing Director, Mike Kalogirou, heard the plight of the tourists including students and teachers over a radio broadcast yesterday while driving and then he jumped into action. “We wanted to extend some of our proudly South African spirit and reach out to these visitors with what we do best.” His phone call to the Airport branch resulted in free meals and hot beverages being distributed to the crowd – many of whom were feeling the pain as a result of delays and cancellations over the last few days with the volcanic ash cloud that invaded European air space. ACSA set up an area at the International Trade Bureau for these passengers, where their needs could be assessed. “Travelling can be stressful, but to be stranded, without funds and have to endure these delays raises that bar. The Fournos Family wanted to share some of our hospitality and make their airport stay more comfortable” said Kalogirou.
Fournos Airport Branch Operations Manager, Ralph Mazur and his team increased production and delivered meals and hot drinks that were much appreciated by the passengers. “While frustrated passengers were desperate to get home, furious that these events were out of their control, they really appreciated our efforts,” said Mazur. Mazur - originally from Austria - even assisted with translation as many of the stranded were Swiss and German passengers. GM of the Airport Fournos, Hezekiel Makamu said “it is painful to see these people exhausted on the floors, we really wanted to reach out to them and fill their tummies and lift their spirits. They were so excited that Ralph could speak their language. We also sent along some dessert late last night to try and leave them with a sweet finish to their SA travels.”
“No-one should go hungry. Everyone needs to know about the friendly, supportive side to South Africa in light of ever-increasing tourism,” said MD Kalogirou. Fournos has always supported those in need with food. Every day, numerous charities across Gauteng benefit from Fournos donations.
Mazur reported that many of those lucky to be departing this morning made a turn past the shop to say thank-you for the hospitality last night.
Fresh baked breads, sweet treats and spit roasted chickens are firm favourites with airport staff as well as passengers. While located in the Domestic Terminal, the Fournos Airport branch has definitely seen an increase in business over the last few days of delays. Fournos Bakery at OR Tambo Airport operates 24-hours a day and has told ACSA they will be happy to assist again today if more stranded tourists need sustenance at the ITB.
